Vigyan Bhairav Tantra, No. 1

Siva’s book ‘Vigyan Bhairav Tantra’, spoken to his consort Parvati, includes 112 distinct meditations.

It is said that everyone can find a suitable meditation in this book, and almost all modern meditations can be traced back to those described by Siva, more than 5,000 years ago.

The first techniques, which focus on the breath, may be seen as the inspiration for Buddha’s Vipassana meditation.

From Vigyan Bhairav Tantra, Meditation, Technique No. 1:

 

“Radiant one,

this experience may dawn between two breaths.

After breath comes in,

and just before going out,

the beneficence.”

 

Sit quietly with eyes closed and allow the mind to stop with the breath.
