Meditation is not a therapy or medicine; it is a technique for creating awareness and consciousness. It is also interesting and fun in many ways and doesn’t need a reason to exist. It just is, and has been for long time, and some people just enjoy it.

It has been said that meditation can help in the treatment of depression, which leads to the question above; how does it work?

To the extent that mental illnesses are based on self-obsession, meditation is bound to help.

The illusion that one can think one’s way out of an illness is problematic. Meditation offers an alternative strategy, incidentally, of simply giving thought a rest for a while.

When consciousness is re-directed away from the mind, the troubles of the mind naturally fade.

Perhaps, during that period of relief, natural healing by the body’s immune system is able to take place, or perhaps there is another reason, but meditation does seem to be an effective treatment for depression.
